41: Driver’s License

Let’s take a look at some additional features of a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license:

  • A specialized font is used for the word “Pennsylvania” written above the main photograph. This font is unique and difficult to duplicate. The state’s web address is directly under Pennsylvania. Notice that there is no “www” before the web address. (Click here to see detail.)

  • In the upper left corner of the main photograph there is a 3-digit number that is half on the photo and half off the photo. This number indicates the photo center in which the ID was issued. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • To the right of the main photograph is the driver license or identification number. Take note of the sequence. It will always be two numbers, a space, three numbers, a space, and then three more numbers. You should never see any dashes or slashes between each set of numbers. Current driver’s licenses are being issued with the first two digits in the low thirties. Therefore, anything higher than forty should be considered a fake. (Click here to see detail.)

  • The number of duplicate cards issued will be identified on the right. This will always contain two digits, even if duplicates were never issued. The issue date on a duplicate ID will be the date the ID was replaced, but the expiration date will be the original expiration date. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • The date of birth, issue date, and expiration date all have the same sequence; the two-digit month, forward slash, the two-digit date, forward slash, and finally, the four-digit year. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • The card holder’s name, address, sex, eye color, and height all appear directly to the right of the main photo. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • All drivers’ license types will list the categories; “class”, “endorsements” and “restrictions”. The identification card will not list these categories, as these are for driving purposes. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • There are ultraviolet sensitive inks embedded within the security background design. These inks are only visible with an ultraviolet light source or black light. highlighted feature
  • The organ donor option is indicated in the bottom right corner. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature
  • Generally, all driver’s licenses and identification cards will be valid for four years for drivers under the age sixty-five. For drivers age sixty-five and over, it is valid for either two or four years. A driver’s license expires the day after the cardholder’s birthday; whereas an identification card will expire the last day of the issue month. (Click here to see detail.)
    highlighted feature

Please note: REAL IDs are valid for 4 years. If an individual chooses to upgrade to a REAL ID prior to their current ID expiring, the expiration date of your first REAL ID license or ID card will include any time remaining on your current license or ID card, plus an additional four years. The features we just discussed are present on every REAL ID compliant or non-REAL ID card. Keep this in mind and take notice of them as we continue to observe more samples.
